Food businesses, especially small, family-owned ones, are struggling to attract customers and maintain a steady cash flow.
Bite-sized Stories is a responsive, mobile-first website that consolidates modes and channels of support to small food businesses. On the site, users can share fond experiences they have had at food businesses in their community. Business owners can use the platform to tell their own story, show how they are adapting to the pandemic, and list support methods that are meaningful to them. Users can browse a crowdsourced repository of food businesses to contribute in a way that best suits their circumstances. Support methods vary in levels of effort, time, finances, and skill, so that anyone can lend a hand or suggest new modes of support.
By humanizing the problem and celebrating the joy that food businesses bring to their communities, Bite-sized Stories incentivizes direct contributions towards small food businesses. The platform will educate users about the impact of COVID-19 on the food industry in the United States, but also encourage them and give them the resources/tools to make meaningful contributions to food businesses. Users’ contributions will help small food businesses break even and collectively keep their communities alive.

The dynamics between food waste and food insecurity have evolved greatly with the pandemic. In the near future, we'd like to build off our work by exploring connections between these communities to support food businesses and those in need of food.
