Obscure Inventions You May Have Never Known is an interactive experience that is part game, part article. My idea for the piece was inspired by a blog post I had stumbled across, showcasing absurdist-looking inventions of the past. It was charming to see an image of an invention before uncovering its true purpose, especially when it managed to defy expectations.

I turned these feelings of intrigue, curiosity, and humor, into an experience that I hope makes us rethink the ways we read and learn online.

Background

Before I created this interactive article, I imagined this same concept in the form of a group guessing game, which I facilitated in real life.

In the game, the facilitator prepares any number of inventions for everyone to guess, with one round covering one invention. Each round, the facilitator presents an image of the invention, and each player has to guess its purpose. When all guesses are in, the facilitator reviews each guess (anonymously) with the group, before revealing the true function and history behind the invention.

Ultimately, I adapted these ideas into an interactive article that still incorporates the community aspects of the game.
